What to Look for When Hiring a Wedding Photographer (Beyond the Pretty Photos)

Hiring a wedding photographer is about more than beautiful images—it’s about finding someone who understands your story, supports your vision, and knows how to capture every meaningful moment. Here’s what to look for (and what most people overlook).

Modern Romantic Tips from Love, Violeta Rose

When you first start planning your wedding, you probably dive headfirst into Pinterest boards and dreamy Instagram feeds. And while those visuals are inspiring, choosing your photographer is about more than just the highlight reel. As someone who’s photographed dozens of weddings, I’m here to walk you through what actually matters. So you can feel confident and excited when choosing the person documenting one of your biggest days.

1. You Should Feel Comfortable With Them

Your photographer will be with you more than almost anyone else on your wedding day. From the nervous jitters in the morning to the dance floor chaos at night. Feeling safe, seen, and genuinely at ease in their presence is essential.

Vibe Check Questions to Ask:

Do I feel relaxed around them?

Would I want them around my family and friends?

Do they listen to what matters most to us?

2. Style Isn't Just Aesthetic, It’s Storytelling

There are many types of photography styles, and understanding your photographer’s approach will help you make the right fit. Here's a quick breakdown:

  • Photojournalistic
Think: real, candid, and unscripted moments.
This is perfect for couples who want their day documented as it naturally unfolds—laughs, tears, and all the beautiful in-between moments.

  • Editorial
Think: polished, magazine-worthy imagery with attention to lighting, styling, and direction.
Ideal for couples who love a fashion-forward or cinematic vibe, and aren’t afraid to go a little bold with their portraits.

  • Traditional
Think: classic portraits, family group shots, and timeless compositions.
Great for couples who want to honor legacy and prioritize beautifully posed images that stand the test of time.

3. Ask About the Full Experience (Not Just the Photos)

Most couples don’t realize how much goes into the process behind the scenes. It’s important to ask about:

  • Turnaround time for your gallery

  • How previews and final images are delivered

  • Whether albums, prints, or film are included

  • Any added services like timeline planning or engagement sessions

✅ Online gallery with high-res + web-size downloads
✅ Print shop access
✅ Sneak peeks within a week
✅ 6–8 week full gallery delivery
✅ Optional add-ons like 35mm film or album design

4. They Can Handle Any Lighting Situation

Whether it’s a dimly lit church, golden hour portraits, or a dark dance floor, an experienced photographer knows how to light and shoot in any condition. You want someone who can adapt with ease—without interrupting the vibe.

📸 Insert Before/After Lighting Comparison:
Left: A candlelit ceremony | Right: Same moment, beautifully captured

5. Questions to Ask in Your Consult Call

To help you feel more prepared (and to weed out photographers who aren’t the right fit), ask these during your intro call:

Top 7 Questions To Ask

  1. How would you describe your shooting style?

  2. Can we see a full wedding gallery?

  3. How do you handle family portraits or large groups?

  4. What’s your backup plan for gear or emergencies?

  5. How do you help couples who feel awkward in front of the camera?

  6. What’s included in your packages—and what’s extra?

  7. Can we chat again before the wedding day?

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, hiring a wedding photographer isn’t about picking the cheapest or the trendiest. It’s about choosing someone who gets your vision, supports your flow, and preserves your memories in a way that feels true to you.

What’s Actually Included in Your Wedding Photography

Wedding photography is so much more than showing up with a camera—it's about connection, storytelling, and capturing the emotion behind every moment. In this post, I’m breaking down everything that goes into your investment—from planning support to gallery delivery—so you know exactly what to expect and why it’s worth it.

Modern Romantic Tips from Love, Violeta Rose

Let’s be real, wedding photography is an investment. But when couples start planning, many don’t realize what’s actually included in that price tag beyond “just showing up with a camera.”

As a NYC-based wedding photographer, I’ve heard every question from “how many photos will we get?” to “why does photography cost so much?” This post is here to walk you through what’s really included in your wedding photography package, so you know exactly what you’re paying for, and why it’s worth every penny.

1. Planning & Prep Support Long Before the Big Day

The work starts long before I press the shutter. From the moment you book, I’m your partner in planning. I’ll help build a photography-friendly timeline, suggest ideal lighting windows, and answer all the “what do we do if it rains?” questions. My job is to make your life easier, not just to take pretty pictures.

2. Your Full Wedding Day Story—Not Just the Highlights

I’m there to tell the whole story—not just the Pinterest-perfect moments. That means the quiet champagne toast with your best friend, the nervous deep breath before walking down the aisle, and the dance floor chaos at 11PM.

Depending on your package, you’ll receive:

  • Coverage ranging from 6 to 10 hours

  • 500–1000+ fully edited high-res images

  • Access to an online gallery to easily download, share, and print

  • Optional add-ons like a 45-minute engagement session or fine art wedding album

3. Expert Editing With a Signature Style

Every single image you receive has been hand-edited by me with care and consistency. I don’t outsource. This ensures your gallery feels timeless, romantic, and true to your day—not over-filtered or trendy.

What editing includes:

  • Culling thousands of images down to the best of the best

  • Color correction and exposure balancing

  • Skin tone smoothing and flyaway retouching (while keeping it natural)

  • Film-inspired tones if you selected hybrid coverage

4. Genuine Connection & Emotional Comfort

One of the most overlooked parts of choosing a wedding photographer? How they make you feel. The couples I work with often tell me, “We felt so comfortable around you, like we could just be ourselves.”

That comfort translates into photos that are real and full of life. You’re not hiring someone to take pictures, you’re hiring someone to witness your love.

“We didn’t feel posed or stiff at all—Caitlyn made us feel like we were just hanging out, and the photos reflect that so beautifully.” – Matt & Leah

Planning Your NYC City Hall Elopement? Here’s What You Need to Know

Eloping at NYC City Hall is effortlessly romantic, but knowing how to plan it well makes all the difference. From getting your license to finding the best photo spots, here’s what to expect—and how to make it feel uniquely yours.

Modern Romantic Tips from Love, Violeta Rose

There’s something wildly romantic about saying “I do” in the heart of New York City. With the buzz of the streets just outside and a quiet, intimate moment inside City Hall. Whether you’re keeping it just the two of you or inviting a handful of close loved ones, a City Hall elopement is anything but boring. It’s chic, spontaneous, and full of storybook energy (think: a quick ceremony, champagne on the courthouse steps, and golden hour portraits in Chinatown).

If you’re wondering how to make this simple celebration feel intentional, stylish, and totally stress-free. You’re in the right place.

Step-by-Step: How to Elope at City Hall in NYC

Planning a City Hall wedding doesn’t have to be confusing. Here’s the basic breakdown:

  • Apply for your marriage license.
You can do this online or in person, but there’s a 24-hour waiting period before it’s valid.

  • Book your ceremony appointment.
Manhattan’s Marriage Bureau now requires this in advance. These slots fill up fast!

  • Bring your documents (and your witness!).
You’ll need valid photo IDs, your license, and one witness 18+—I can even be your witness if you need one.

What the Day Actually Feels Like

I’ll meet you outside the Marriage Bureau and walk you through the whole thing. The ceremony itself? Super quick—like 2 minutes quick. But don’t be fooled by the length—there’s still plenty of time for happy tears, hand squeezes, and “did we really just do that?” grins.

Afterward, we take the city by storm. Whether that means exploring cobblestone streets in Soho, snapping a few film shots under the Manhattan Bridge, or stopping for pizza in your wedding outfits—this is where the magic really happens.

What to Wear + What to Bring

Your wedding wardrobe should be an extension of who you are; laid back, glam, vintage, modern, or anything in between. Whether it’s a linen suit, a veil with a jumpsuit, or a thrifted designer find, the photos shine when you feel like you.

Here are a few practical add-ons to keep in mind:

  • Clear umbrellas (just in case)

  • A backup pair of comfy shoes

  • A small bouquet or boutonniere

  • Blotting sheets or a handkerchief (NYC summers, we see you)

✨Pro Tip: Morning appointments usually mean softer lighting, fewer crowds, and better photo vibes.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

As your photographer, I’m not just showing up to shoot. I’m your cheerleader, your gentle guide, and your second pair of hands when you're juggling a bouquet and an umbrella. I’ll help with planning, give you location ideas, and make sure your day feels completely yours.

Why a Wedding Timeline with Photography in Mind Matters

Your wedding day flies by—and a thoughtful timeline ensures you don’t miss the magic. Here’s why planning with photography in mind makes all the difference (and leads to the dreamiest photos).

Modern Tips from Love, Violeta Rose

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life but it goes by in a flash. Between hair and makeup, getting dressed, the ceremony, portraits, and dancing the night away, it’s easy to feel like you blinked and missed it. That’s why building a thoughtful timeline, with photography in mind, is one of the best things you can do to create a relaxed, meaningful, and beautifully documented day.

Let’s Talk Light

As your photographer, I’m always thinking about light, especially natural light. It shapes the mood of your photos and can make a huge difference in the overall look and feel of your gallery.

💡 Pro Tip: The best time for portraits is golden hour. The soft, warm light right before sunset. If we can carve out even 15 minutes during this time, the results are magic.

The “First Look” Factor

A first look (when couples see each other before the ceremony) isn’t just emotional, it’s practical too. It opens up the timeline for relaxed portraits and reduces pressure after the ceremony.

Benefits of a First Look:

  • More time for couples’ portraits in good light

  • A private moment together before the day rushes in

  • Ability to knock out family and wedding party photos early

  • More time to enjoy cocktail hour or mingle with guests

Timeline Examples: With & Without a First Look

Here’s a simplified breakdown of how the day can flow:

✨ With a First Look

1:00 PM – Getting Ready + Details
2:30 PM – First Look + Portraits
3:15 PM – Wedding Party + Family Photos
4:30 PM – Ceremony
5:00 PM – Cocktail Hour
6:00 PM – Reception
7:30 PM – Golden Hour Sneak-Out for Portraits

💍 Without a First Look

1:00 PM – Getting Ready + Details
4:00 PM – Ceremony
4:30 PM – Family + Wedding Party Photos
5:00 PM – Couple Portraits
6:00 PM – Reception

🔔 Notice: Less time for portraits and more pressure post-ceremony, especially if light is fading.

Build In Breathing Room

One of the most overlooked details? Giving yourself time to pause and breathe. Whether it’s 10 minutes with your partner after the ceremony, or a quiet moment with your maid of honor before the dress goes on, buffer time means less stress and better photos.

I always work with my couples to build in:

  • A quiet moment post-ceremony

  • Time to fix hair, touch up makeup, hydrate

  • A cushion in case anything runs behind (which it often does!)

Final Thoughts

When we plan your timeline together, we’re not just organizing logistics—we’re making space for presence. We’re protecting the calm, the beauty, the meaningful pauses that allow for stunning, authentic photography.

If you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry—that’s what I’m here for. Every couple I work with gets my support in crafting a photography-friendly timeline that’s tailored to your day, your energy, and your love story.

These Couples LOVED Their Wedding Photos: Preview Their Galleries

A collection of my favorite wedding photos—moments filled with joy, emotion, and intention. From timeline planning to golden hour portraits, here’s how I help couples feel present while capturing their day as it truly unfolds.

Weddings are layered with so many moving parts, and my job is to slow it all down, to catch the fleeting moments that deserve to be remembered forever. From the first call, I’m not just learning your story, I’m learning what matters most to you on your day. I connect with planners, vendors, and venue coordinators to understand the full picture, often doing site visits in advance so I can anticipate the best lighting, portrait spots, and transitions. Building a thoughtful timeline with my couples helps us flow through the day with intention. Making space for both the big moments and the quiet ones in between.

By the time the wedding arrives, we’ve done the prep work to make it feel effortless. I’m not just showing up to document, I’m helping to create a grounded, joyful experience. Whether I’m fluffing your dress, sneaking you away for golden hour portraits, or wrangling family for group shots, I’ve got your back the whole way through. This gallery holds some of my favorite images: laughter during speeches, intimate vows, dance floor chaos. Real love, real people, real memories.

My Favorite Collection of Engagement and Elopement Photos

This is a look into some of my favorite engagement and elopement sessions—candid, heartfelt, and full of movement. From our first consult to the final gallery, every moment is about making you feel seen, comfortable, and completely yourselves.

There’s something so special about engagement and elopement sessions. The quiet in-between moments, the stolen glances, the laughter that breaks through when I remind couples it’s okay to just be themselves. From the first inquiry, I want every couple to feel like they're not just booking a shoot, but beginning a shared creative process. We start with a consultation to talk through their story, what they’re envisioning, and any nerves they might have. I love using that time to get a feel for their dynamic, it helps me approach the day of the shoot with ideas that are tailored, not templated.

By the time we meet for the session, it already feels like we know each other. I guide them through prompts and playful directions, but my goal is always to let their personalities lead. Whether we’re dancing down a quiet street in the West Village or sneaking kisses between cab rides, I’m always chasing that moment where they forget the camera is there. This collection holds some of my favorite images, filled with movement, emotion, and light. I’m so grateful to the couples who’ve trusted me to document their love in such an honest way.

Outfits, Posing, Location: How to Plan a Dreamy Engagement Session (Without the Stress)

From playful strolls through the city to quiet, golden-hour moments — engagement sessions are where the magic begins. Here's how I help couples feel confident, have fun, and walk away with photos that feel like them.

Modern Romantic Tips from Love, Violeta Rose

You're engaged! Now what? Aside from soaking up every minute of this special season, it’s time to think about how you want to remember it forever. Engagement photos are more than just a pre-wedding tradition—they’re an opportunity to capture your relationship in its most natural, joyful, and honest form.

Here are a few essentials to help you plan a session that feels true to you:

  1. Choose a Season That Feels Different From the Wedding

Many of my couples pick a season or location that contrasts with their wedding vibe. Want spring blossoms or fall leaves? Or a casual city stroll vs. a more formal wedding venue? We’ll spend about 1–2 hours together, so let’s make that time visually unique and deeply personal.

2. Pick a Location That Tells Your Story

Forget cookie-cutter spots. Think: where did you first meet, have a meaningful date, or just love to hang out together? Your home, your go-to bar, or even a park bench can make the perfect backdrop. If you're stuck, don’t worry—I’ve got ideas and I'm always down to scout with you.

3. Time It Right: Golden Hour or Soft Morning Glow

Light is everything. The best times to shoot are early morning just after sunrise or about two hours before sunset. Don’t stress about cloudy skies though—overcast light can be soft, romantic, and so flattering.

4. Outfits: Go for Confidence, Not Costume

I recommend two looks: something you'd wear on a cute date night, and a more relaxed outfit. But if one feels best—go for it! Solids, earth tones, and quiet patterns photograph beautifully. Shoes? Comfort first. We walk, we move, we have fun.

5. "But We’re Awkward in Photos…"

That’s what everyone says. And that’s exactly why my sessions are full of movement, laughter, and prompts that feel natural. My goal is to help you feel like yourselves, not models. You'll walk away feeling closer and with photos that reflect your love, not a photoshoot.

BONUS TIP: Bring the Pup, Pop the Bubbly

Want to include your dog? YES. Thinking of toasting with champagne? Please do! This is your date night with a photographer third-wheeling—make it memorable.
